On 10 April 2025, stakeholders (experts, policymakers, implementors and community leaders) gathered at Southstar Hotel in Hawassa for the inception workshop to address scabies among street children.

Key highlights from the inception workshop included:

1. Project goal:

  • Develop and test targeted interventions to determine the feasibility, effectiveness, and sustainability of integrated health and social services and reduce scabies prevalence and improve children’s health and well-being.

2. Key strategies:

  • Community engagement to ensure culturally appropriate solutions.
  • Partnerships with local health providers and NGOs for sustainable implementation.

3. Challenges discussed:

  • Reaching marginalized children and ensuring adherence to treatment.
  • Resource constraints and the need for scalable, low-cost interventions.

4. Next steps:

  • Pilot testing of interventions, with a focus on monitoring and stakeholder collaboration.

This research is supported by Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) through a grant awarded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
